I have spent the last couple of years working in recruiting. Every week I end up interviewing around 15 people, which may not seem like a lot, but there goes half my work week just in interviews. Out of the 15 I’d say nearly half have some of the most unrealistic career expectations – expectations that are obviously stopping them from landing a job.

Here are some examples:

Recent grads with zero work experience expecting to make 50k their first year just because they majored in finance. (Um, that didn’t even happen before the Recession)
Displaced New Yorkers expecting to make the same salary in South Florida.
People who’ve been out of work for some time expecting to make the same salary they made back when they were working.
People expecting to move into management right away.
Medical admins expecting to get hired for pharmaceutical sales with NO SALES EXPERIENCE.

So what happens when companies and hiring managers hear this? They think you don’t live on this planet, that’s what!

Being misinformed about what you should be earning, what positions you qualify for and the local economy pave the way for some serious interviewing faux pas. Simply put, you look clueless before you even get considered for a second job interview.
